好用的3個英文學習網站

前幾天在Youtube看了阿滴介紹3個英文學習超棒的網站，覺得超級實用，很多留言也說這3個網站對於自學的人很有幫助，所以我想記錄在這裡，也分享給"有緣人"。

如何建立批判性思考

這一篇是來自於VOA Learning English的文章「Improve Your Writing by Studying Critical Thinking」，在此分享給想要學習並建立批判性思考的朋友們。

為何「Critical thinking」重要？批判性的思考是思路清楚並將之組織起來的能力。寫作展現的是一個人的思考，學校和雇主常把批判性思考能力看得很重，如美國SAT的考試就有相關的測驗。此外，現今職場中，批判性思考是屬一屬二重要的能力。


文中強調了「批判性思考」不好教也不好學，唯有透過在閱讀時，反問自己以下問題:

• What is the argument that the writer is making? (作者論點為何)
• What evidence does the writer use? (作者論證為何)
• How does the writer present their ideas? (作者如何呈現其想法)
• How is the writer connecting their ideas? (作者如何將其想法連結起來)
• How does the writer evaluate information? (作者如何評估資訊)

正如同文中引用了Babi Kruchin 紐約哥倫比亞大學美國語言課程講師所給的學習建議：

"How is the content organized here? How is the writer connecting these ideas? Look at the quote that the writer used. What comes after this quote? Does the writer just leave it as is, or analyze it and adds his or her own idea?"

[網站] Just The Word 尋找字的搭配和應用的好幫手

寫作時若遇到不知如何使用的單字時，我們可以google或查字典去看例句，不過，也可以利用Just The Word這個網站。

Just The Word 是一個可以幫助我們查詢一個字(或字詞)的搭配組合(collocation)的實用網站，透過此網站的查詢結果，我們可以找出指定單字最常使用的搭配組合，這對我們在單字的使用上能更加精確。

查詢單字"rain"的搜尋結果，每個括弧的數字表示例句數目，可以點進去看例句。

此外，網站也可幫你查你提供的詞組是否是好的詞組。例如搜尋"thick rain"，得到以下的答案：

"thick rain"有零個例句且是壞的字詞組合，建議使用"heavy rain"。

寫作提示Writing Prompts

想要練習寫英文，卻又不知要寫什麼嗎？網路無所不能，只要利用搜尋引擎，一定可以找到一堆寫作題目，就怕沒心而已。（在孤狗大神鍵入"writing prompts"，好多資源即跳了出來，也能為老師們找到給學生們的寫作題材）

這裡分享紐約時報提供的writing prompts，有PDF檔可供下載，此外在每個頁面裡的寫作提示皆有連結可得到進一步的資訊，如該寫作提示相關新聞文章，寫作提示引導等，借由著這些引導思考，讓我們對寫作的題目更有方向和內容。

句點點在哪？Does a full stop (period) go inside or outside quotation marks?

If the quoted words end with a full stop, then the full stop goes inside the quotation marks. If the quoted words do not end with a full stop, then the full stop goes outside the quotation marks:

He said: "I love you."
She has read "War and Peace".

Note that in US English, the full stop usually goes inside the quotation marks in all cases:美式用法中，任何情形之下句點都落在引號內。

He said: "I love you."
She has read "War and Peace."

However, US English adopts the British style for question marks and exclamation marks:

He said: "Do you love me?"
Have you read "War and Peace"?
Can you imagine? He has never read "War and Peace"!

寫作時的一些小建議Some ideas for planning your next composition

1. Make an outline of what you want to say.(將你想要說的列大綱)

2. In your first paragraph, state clearly the problem you are trying to
solve.(第一段清楚陳述你要解決的問題)

3. In your last paragraph, summarize you essay and indicate your
conclusions.(在末段文章裡，總結並作結論)

4. Use concrete examples to illustrate your arguments, or the points you are tring to make.(用具體範例來闡明你的論點或重點)
