4.Have fun!

7 TOEIC TIPS

今天收到了englishclub寄來的標題為「多益七撇步」(7 TOEIC TIPS)的電子報,雖然本人並無在準備多益,但覺得這七撇步並未僅全然侷限於多益考試,一般英語檢定考試也可使用。

7 TOEIC TIPS

Test of English for International Communication TOEIC is a standardized test that measures your listening and reading skills. Unlike other tests, the TOEIC evaluates your ability to function in the business world rather than in an academic setting.

Here are 7 tips if you're planning to take TOEIC.

1. Set a goal

2. Understand the test

3. Make a study plan

4. Divide study time appropriately

5. Build a strong vocabulary

6. Isolate your weak points

7. Eliminate distractors

You'll find explanations of the above and many more tips at: http://www.englishclub.com/esl-exams/ets-toeic-tips.htm

You can also do a TOEIC practice session (with audio) at: http://www.englishclub.com/esl-exams/ets-toeic-practice.htm

Why? 浪費時間嘛。

最後就是「練習大聲讀」(Practice reading aloud),我舉雙手雙腳同意這個學習方法,真的很有效。我只要讀唸一些文章過後,在聽一些國外的英文節目時,我就瞬間覺得真的聽懂的句子變多了!"Reading out loud will help your listening and reading comprehension skills. In order to comprehend English more quickly, it is important that you understand the rhythm of the language. Read from textbooks, pamphlets, newspapers, and even children's novels. You might want to tape yourself and listen to how you sound."(大聲讀出來會對你的聽力和閱讀理解能力有幫助。為了能較迅速的理解英文,了解它的語言節奏是十分重要的。......)

Million Star Gang

The hottest topic among young adults--Million Star Gang
===========
POP STOP

It is amazing to see how the entertainment apparatus turns a nobody into a star and its efficiency to produce, consume and cash in on its creations is flabbergasting. Right now the machine is working its magic on Aska Yang (楊宗緯), its latest product. A local version of China's Li Yuchun (李宇春), Yang rocketed to stardom after participating in the singing contest One Million Star (超級星光大道), on national TV. Two months on, the college student-turned-household name keeps the nation enthralled with no more than a reasonably nice voice and a bent for getting teary eyed over defeated contenders.

Nicknamed cry baby for his tears and caveman for his rugged appearance, Yang has quickly become the gossip rag's new favorite as paparazzi digs out dirt saying the contestant once flunked out of college, subtracted five years from his real age and has developed a predilection for young, pretty assistants.

The show has been accused of deliberately eliminating Yang from the competition so that it can invite him back later in the game, adding a bit of suspense and drama to the show even as the star in the making ensures that gossip fodder is in ample supply.

The Aska craze is predicted to reach a climax in a couple of months as Yang and the nine other finalists, now dubbed as the Million Star Gang (星光幫), are working on their first compilation album slated to hit the market in the summer. Whether or not the gang are successful products like Hello Kitty or Jolin Tsai (蔡依林), only time will tell.

句點點在哪?Does a full stop (period) go inside or outside quotation marks?

If the quoted words end with a full stop, then the full stop goes inside the quotation marks. If the quoted words do not end with a full stop, then the full stop goes outside the quotation marks:

He said: "I love you."
She has read "War and Peace".

Note that in US English, the full stop usually goes inside the quotation marks in all cases:美式用法中,任何情形之下句點都落在引號內。

He said: "I love you."
She has read "War and Peace."

However, US English adopts the British style for question marks and exclamation marks:

He said: "Do you love me?"
Have you read "War and Peace"?
Can you imagine? He has never read "War and Peace"!

Grammar point: 進行式代替未來式

English, Baby!: Business Traveler(此連結有效期限一週,逾期需入會員才可瀏覽。)

The forms will and going to are used to talk about the future. In addition to will and going to, most native English speakers use the present continuous tense ( [be] + -ing) to talk about things happening in the future.

In the conversation between John and Taylor, John says: "I am going to Montreal." Though he is going to go to Montreal in the future, he uses the present continuous am going to talk about his trip.

Similarly, Taylor says: "I know that you're going to be meeting with business clients." He uses the going to form to talk about the future, but he could also say "I know that you are meeting with business clients," to talk about a future event.

Other examples include:

Tomorrow I am eating at my friend's house.

We are flying to Amsterdam this summer.

She is throwing a party on Friday night.

What's your hobby?

Discover A Hobby 網站幾乎網羅了各式的休閒活動,藉由該網站我們也可以學一些活動的英文。一般的爬山若是說"mountain climbing"就不大對了,應該就是"hiking"。

會看到這個網站其實是因為lifehack的一篇文章,先前他們提到"十個關掉電視的理由",但關掉電視後要做什麼咧?何不培養一個新的嗜好呢?故後來介紹了這個Discover a hobby網站。

New York Times: English as Langauge of Global Education

New York Times: English as Langauge of Global Education

上英文課教授老師用英文講是很自然的事,但是上一些非英語科的課程,聽的卻是英文,會不會有所阻礙呢?我聽過好像台灣某些大學有開設類似的課程,即老師上課使用英語來教學。在巴黎的大學裡,即便是普通課程也逐漸的以英語來教學,這樣的轉變,自然就有人覺得無法接受。為何轉用英語來上課呢?巴黎一所商業學校MBA課程主任Laurent Bibard解釋:

"It's the language for international teaching," he said. "English allows students to be able to come from anyplace in the world and for our students — the French ones — to go everywhere."

當然還有經費等一些因素,若以英語來上課不僅可吸引世界各地的學生,最主要的還可吸引來自英語系國家的學生。

"Revenue is very important, and in order to provide good services, we need to cover our expenses for the library and research journals. We need to cover all these things with a bigger number of students so it's quite important to attract international students."

以下的情況我很能體會。

But getting students to feel comfortable speaking English in the classroom is easier said than done. When younger French students at Essec start a required course in organizational analysis, the atmosphere is marked by long, uncomfortable silences, said Alan Jenkins, a management professor and academic director of the executive M.B.A. program.

"They are very good on written tasks, but there's a lot of reticence on oral communication and talking with the teacher," Dr. Jenkins said, adding that he used role-playing to encourage students to speak. He also refuses to speak in French. "I have to force myself to say, 'Can you give me that in English?'"

在韓國首爾的一所大學裡的部份課程也採全英語授課,當然開始時總會遭遇一些問題甚至質疑,但學生終究受益:

At the beginning, "teaching courses in English may have less efficiency or effectiveness in terms of knowledge transfer than those courses taught in Korean," said Anna Suh, program manager for the university's office of global affairs, who said that students eventually see the benefits. "Our aim for this kind of program is to prepare and equip our students to be global leaders in this new era of internationalization."

國際上的競爭無所不在,要與他國競爭,英語授課勢在必行。

"Internationally, the competition is everywhere," Dr. Bredillet said. "For a master's in management, I'm competing with George Washington University. I'm competing with some programs in Germany, Norway and the U.K. That's why we're delivering the curriculum in English."

Taiwanese light up 8.1-mile long firecracker string in world record bid

Taiwanese light up 8.1-mile long firecracker string in world record bid

Canadian Press

Monday, March 05, 2007

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) - Organizers lit up a 8.1-mile string of explosives in a southern Taiwanese county Sunday, hoping to create the world's longest firecracker in a record-setting attempt expected to last two hours.

TV footage of the Chinese New Year celebration in Tainan County, dubbed "Legend of the Fire Dragon," showed rapid flashes of bright red explosions that created huge wafts of white smoke.

Throngs that had gathered to witness the spectacle wore masks, goggles, and even motorcycle helmets to protect themselves from the pollution.

The firecracker was expected to take two hours to finish burning.

The record-breaking attempt needs to be verified by Guinness World Records.

Taiwanese newspaper United Daily News reported that Spain holds the current world record for the longest continuously burning firecracker at 7 miles.

The record wasn't listed on the Guinness World Records official Web site, which only contains partial listings.

The festivities in Taiwan Sunday marked the last day of the 15-day Chinese New Year celebration. Other locals set aloft lanterns in the sky.

To teach or not to teach English grammar

這個問題想必是很多英文老師最想問的問題,對較年幼的學生來說,不用太著重於文法上的解釋,而對成人學生來說,文法就是個重要課題了。但不管答案為何,任何一位英文學習者,都該儘量讓自己多接觸英文並創造使用英文的機會。

By Shih-Fan Kao 高士凡

Sunday, Mar 04, 2007, Page 8

About three months ago, a colleague told me that she just spent two hours teaching students the different usages of the English word "as."

I then asked her if she thought, after her dedicated efforts, her students could then use the word accurately in day-to-day conversations. Her answer, interestingly, was that she didn't think so, because it all depended on how much exposure to English the students would get outside the classroom.

I began to wonder if it is worth spending so much time teaching English grammar to students because a number of empirical studies have demonstrated that the critical factor for students' proper use of English grammar is more the result of real-life exposure than learning in the classroom. Only if grammatical structures are used in an authentic context do they have meaning.

For this reason, EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers have to create situations in which the students feel a need to utilize grammar in order to communicate properly in English. In other words, the students learn grammar more effectively when grammar is contextualized -- not singled out as a separate "skill" or "course."

From the 1950s through the 1980s, the manner in which grammar was taught in countries like Taiwan was not put into question, owing to a grammar-centric teaching of the language.

During this period, teaching English and teaching grammar were virtually synonymous. Questions on whether and how to teach grammar arose during the mid-1980s, as communicative language teaching, which emphasized the use of English as a means to communicate, came into fashion.

Today, only a few researchers and teachers advocate "no grammar at all" in the teaching of English, while most experts think that appropriate attention to grammar can speed up learning.

Research has shown that variables such as age, proficiency level, language skills, needs and goals can help teachers determine the role of grammar in teaching.

Note that grammar is important to some extent in all variables, depending on the continuum of each. In terms of abstraction capabilities and levels of cognition, the focus on grammar is more important to adults, whereas it is less important to young children and somewhere in between to teenagers.

Thus, to teach or not to teach English grammar may not be a question anymore; how to teach it is now the real issue and this is where teaching professionals can't seem to agree.

One of the most frequently asked questions is: should English grammar be taught explicitly or implicitly? Many of those who were born before the early 1980s in Taiwan had to experience the explicit (or deductive) method of grammar instruction, with direct teacher explanations followed by related exercises tailored to reflect entrance exams.

By contrast, implicit (or inductive) teaching occurs when students are exposed to various language forms and are left to discover grammar rules on their own. Advocates of this approach argue that students can acquire English naturally if they are provided with an adequate amount of comprehensible input.

Most students prefer the explicit approach because it requires less mental effort.

Many researchers think that in most contexts, the implicit approach is more appropriate because it goes with natural language acquisition. For this reason, one of the most important homework assignments for EFL learners is to get English input outside the classroom.

It is language use -- not the conscious focus on grammar -- that accounts for effective communication and interaction between human beings.

英式和美式英語的差異

English Feed最新的內容談的是英式英語和美式英語的不同處,主持人在播客裡約略提及了一些,如拼字上的不同,用法上的不同,還有文法上的不同。其中,他提到了一直潛浮在我腦海裡但又不那麼積極去解開的一個疑惑,那就是"He has just gone to the bank"和"He just went to the bank."在使用上的差別。我知道這兩者的用法皆可,但現在更進一步的知道前者是英式的用法,後者是美式的用法。

此外,該篇文章還有提供相關的兩個連結,一是美式腔調訓練(圖一),另一個是美式和英式英文字彙的不同,有興趣的朋友可以看看哦。

薪金待遇常常是面試到最後考官後問你的問題之一。如何表達你想要的薪水數目?下面是一些表述薪金待遇常用的句子,不妨借鑑一下。

1. The starting salary I require is HK$6,500 per month.

Dear wang litte girl:

From see you one eye, I shit love you.

(本想寫”自從見你第一眼,我便對你魂牽夢繞”,可魂牽夢繞我實在譯不出,只好寫成”我便愛上你”,”便”譯成shit是鄰居小孩告訴我的,他說VCD裡老有人說:”shit”,這個shit就是”便”。)

your eyes close,I die;your eyes open ,I come back olive.Your eyes close and open again and again ,I die again and again. 你的眼睛閉上,我就死了,你的眼睛睜開,我又活過來了,你眼睛眨呀眨,我就死去活來。

Maybe you do not know me ,no matter.one see clock emotion is pop.

“也許你還不認識我,沒有關系,一見鐘情很流行。”

(譯一見鐘情頗費了一番功夫,一、見、情都會,但鐘字怎麼譯呢,一抬頭,見鬧鐘上寫著呢:clock,pop這個詞是從電視中學來的,最流行的音樂唱片就是top of thepops,呵呵,處處留心皆學問呀。)

I think I should introduce myself to you.

我想應該介紹一下自己。

(事實證明我的英文啟蒙老師很有遠見,她說要是哪天你到了國外,要找外國MM套磁,就要用這句。不過,不知她有沒有想到我現在是用這句話來唬中國MM。)

I call Li old big. toyear 25.

我叫李老大,今年25. (今天是today,那麼今年是toyear,沒有錯的吧。)

My home four mouth people:papa, mama,I and DD.

我家有四口人:爸爸、媽媽、我和弟弟。

(還好,幸虧在網上混了這麼多年,知道GG,JJ,MM,DD怎麼寫的。)

I beat letter very fast, because I am a computer high hand.Ievenact as black guest.

我打字很快,因為我是電腦高手,我甚至還當過黑客呢。

I do early fu*ck every day,so that I can have strong body to protect you.

我每天都做早操,這樣我會有強壯的身體來保護你。

(“操”譯成fu*ck也是鄰居小孩告訴我的,他還說VCD裡就是這麼譯的,人家外國電影不會用錯的。)

Please come to eat and sleep with me, or I will cut myhair to be a monk , and find a place where many monkslive in to over mylife.

請嫁給我吧,否則我將削發為僧,找個廟來了此一生。

(實在想不起嫁字怎麼譯了,好在我腦袋靈光,嫁過來不就是和我吃住在一起嗎?禍不單行,廟字我又忘記怎麼譯了,不過這也難不倒我,好多和尚住的地方不就是廟嗎?為自己的聰明鼓掌!至于了此一生,打遊戲時最後不是gameover吧,over當然就是結束啦。)

your old big

你的老大

(為了表示親切,署名時我省去了姓,不過你的老大聽起來有點象黑社會的感覺,算了,不管它啦。)
